The offense of Embezzlement is a misdemeanor or felony offense punishable by between 93 days in the Washtenaw County jail or up to 20 years imprisonment in the Michigan Department of Corrections, depending on the circumstances of the case.

A person, who as the agent or employee of another person or other legal entity, who fraudulently converts to his/her own use any money or other personal property that is under his/her control by virtue of his/her being an agent or employee is guilty of the crime of Embezzlement. The punishment for the offense of Embezzlement depends on the amount of money or the value of the property embezzled as noted below.

Embezzlement of $100,000.00 or more is a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for up to 20 years and/or a fine of up to $50,000.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of between 6-8 years in prison.

Embezzlement of $50,000.00 or more but less than $100,000.00 is a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for up to 15 years and/or a fine of up to $25,000.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of between 3-6 years in prison.

Embezzlement of $20,000.00 or more but less than $50,000.00 is a felony offense punishable by by imprisonment for up to 10 years and/or a fine of not more than $15,000.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of between 1-3 years in prison.

Embezzlement of $1,000.00 or more but less than $20,000.00 is a felony offense punishable by imprisonment for up to 5 years and/or a fine of not more than $10,000.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of between 1-6 months in jail with 2-3 years of supervised probation and jail work program or community service and treatment requirements.

Embezzlement of $200.00 or more but less than $1,000.00 is a misdemeanor offense punishable by imprisonment for up to 1 year and/or a fine of not more than $2,000.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of 2 years supervised probation with jail work program and/or community service and treatment requirements.

Embezzlement of less than $200.00 is a misdemeanor offense punishable by imprisonment for up to 93 days and/or a fine of not more than $500.00 or 3 times the value of the property embezzled, whichever is greater. A person convicted of this offense in Washtenaw County will typically receive a sentence of 1-2 years of supervised probation with community service and treatment requirements.
